Artist's Statement

Aristotle is quoted as saying "Art completes what nature cannot bring to finish." Maybe art attempts to capture a spirit in a mason jar. I try to share my vision of nature and allow it to evolve into a drawing, a photograph or a piece of jewelry. As I approach each piece I don't think about the larger picture, but about the small, usually unseen parts of nature, like a single leaf in a tree or a rock in a stream bed. I strive to work with natural materials and create works that are representative of the inspiration found in nature.

Profile

Cherie grew up in Ithaca, New York where bubbling creeks, magnificent waterfalls and clear lakes were part of everyday life. This natural environment translated into her drawings. While earning degrees in writing and communication, Cherie continued her passion of entwining art with nature. She has created drawings, pen and ink, watercolors, fabric art and photography. Today she lives in Austin, Texas and is focused on creating wearable pieces of nature translated into gemstone and silver jewelry. Her work serves as a reminder that nature is precious.

Tools & Techniques

Cherie uses a variety of jewelry making techniques, including stringing, wire work and wire-wrapping, chain maille weaving, and setting gemstones.

A sketch artist at heart, most designs start out as a pencil drawing and develop from there. Cherie's jewelry is unique because she exclusively uses silver and natural materials, and she challenges herself to discover uncommon and interesting stones. She occasionally uses other natural materials, such as representative clay, glass, pearls, shells and wood.

Silver wire, findings and beads integral to the design are all sterling silver - 92.5% pure or ".925 sterling silver". Silver is a great metal for jewelry because it looks beautiful against any skin tone, it is durable, and it is easy to care for. Silver will develop a natural patina over time - a tarnished looking appearance caused by oxidation - which adds to the character of each piece.

Combining naturally occurring gemstones and the element of silver results in jewelry inspired by and crafted from nature.
